Setting up email in Mozilla Thunderbird

Microsoft Outlook Express Microsoft Outlook
Windows Mail/Live Mail Set Up Mac Mail

We will send you three pieces of information which you will need. The email address, password and mail server address. These are the same whatever software you use to send and receive mail.

Although the wording and layout may vary slightly, it should be straightforward and any variation will be minor. The settings will all be the same.

Step 1.

Open Thunderbird (in the Start Menu or the Desktop link)

Step 2.

If the account assistant does not automatically start, then open the tools menu and choose Account Settings (second from bottom).

Step 3.

Click the 'Account Actions' button at the bottom right of the box and select 'Add Mail Account' from the drop down.

Step 4.   Enter your name (as you want it to appear in other people's inbox), your full email address (e.g. user@example.com) and password. Click Continue.

Step 5

The software will try to set up the account automatically. Tell it to stop because it will try to set up your email as IMAP. Enter the details we sent you and the server types as:

Incoming mail server type: POP3
Incoming Port: 110

Outgoing mail server port: 25
Then click 'set up manually.

Step 6

Because we use shared mail servers you may get a message stating that the outgoing mail server is insecure. If you feel that you can not use an insecure mail server, you can use your own ISP's outgoing mail server. This can be found in the help and support section of your ISP's website.

The relevant settings you need to adjust are highlighted:

Thunderbird POP3

Thunderbird SMTP

Make sure you choose to use the right outgoing server:

Thunderbird Main Settings

Step 7   Click create account. Click OK.
